Registration is open to youth handlers aged 8-17 and their dog. Prerequisites include successful completion of a prior obedience class, a reliable stay and recall (instructor’s discretion). Per DTCCU youth policies, a parent/guardian must be on the premises. Limited to 6 working teams. $40, per DTCCU youth policy. Class will be held outdoors in a fenced area. Class will be postponed for inclement weather. Class time includes set-up and tear-down and students will be expected to help with this (carts are available).
The learning objectives for this class include: Using your body language to cue your dog (wraps, sends, return to heel, stay); introducing dogs to jumps, tunnels, the plank, with an emphasis on safety; agility handling skills; improving your bond with your dog and having fun!
At least one gymkhana game will be played each week at the end of class. Gymkhana is a word of Indian origin that means sports games! Examples include Rodeo Dog games, CPE Speedway games, and jump gymnastics games.
The Dog Training Club of Champaign Urbana offers youth trainers the member rate for training classes, currently $80 for 8 weeks and $40 for 4 weeks. All regular rules apply. Youth should be handling the dog in the class, and the dog must meet all prerequisites for the class, which can be found on the website. Most classes require a CGC (AKC Canine Good Citizen). Youth are welcome to train in DTCCU classes with a responsible adult present. Instructors retain the right to ask an adult to handle the dog if the child is struggling or presents a safety hazard. DTCCU members have priority registration and youth may join DTCCU. Youth may join the DTCCU. Parents are responsible for any damage caused by their children.
