This is an introductory AKC tracking class. No knowledge of tracking is expected at the start of the class. By the end of the class handler/dog teams should understand the rules for AKC tracking, including the process to enter a test, and be able to complete a track with one corner. Each class will last for 3-4 hours. Part of each class will be spent discussing scent theory, equipment, handling, and AKC tracking rules and regulations. The discussion may be in person at the club or online. The majority of each class will be spent outside tracking the dogs in various areas in Champaign County.
The homework load for this class is rigorous. Handlers are expected to track 3 times/week outside of class, regardless of the weather. During the winter months this means class participants may be tracking in the dark.
Tracking tests are held in a variety of weather conditions so this class will be held regardless of weather conditions. Handlers will need to dress appropriately.
There is no minimum age to start tracking. Puppies are welcome, as are dogs that do not yet have obedience training.
The class will meet for four weeks during the session but not necessarily 4 weeks in a row. There will be an online Zoom-type session before class begins; time and date will be decided once participants have registered for the class.
Class fee is the same as an 8-week class.
Class limit: 4 dog/handler teams
